According to the coalition for the homeless, in August 2017, there were 61,471 homeless people, including 15,315 homeless families with 22,970 homeless children, sleeping each night in the New York City municipal shelter system. Families make up three-quarters of the homeless shelter population. Over the course of City fiscal year 2017, 129,803 different homeless men, women, and children slept in the shelter system. This is 75% higher than it was 10 years ago.
Every year our cities food pantries are overwhelmed with supplying food to the homeless and those in need. Many of these pantries operate without government funding and rely on the generosity of others to support their communities. In response to this need, the Hunters Point Civic association and your local Lions Club, have organized a yearly thanksgiving food drive which collects thousands of pounds of food through the support of donations from residents in Manhattan and Queens. Last year we collected over 5,000 pounds of food for local food pantries and have more than 11,000 pounds since 2014.
In a couple weeks, we will have collection boxes in the lobbies of buildings throughout the city for the purpose of food donations. If you'd like to have a box placed in your lobby, please reach out to us. A list of needed items is provided to help residents purchase the right items. And, if you prefer, a tax deductible donations can be made here.
Your donation this holiday season will have a direct and positive impact on the lives of those less fortunate... All support for this program is volunteer. If you can help, please contact us to volunteer and review our events calendar for volunteer dates.
